Man dies after 80km/h joyride in shopping trolley down steep hill in Sydney

Two men who went for a joyride in a shopping trolley down a steep hill in Sydneyreached speeds of up to 80km/h before they were hit by a car, killing one and seriously injuring the other.
The two 28-year-old men were riding the metal trolley down Coogee Bay Road in Randwick early on Tuesday morning when they were struck by a car just after midnight.
The men were reportedly friends visiting Australia from Sweden.
“The estimate is that the men were travelling about 80km/h in the trolley, so they had certainly gathered some speed,” Chief Inspector Chris Stiles told Fairfax Media.
One man died at the scene while the second man was taken to St Vincent’s hospital with serious injuries.
Stiles said one of the men had been living in Australia for the past two years and his friend had arrived a week ago to visit. “It sounds like they might have had a bit of fun together, resulting in this terrible incident,” he said.
The 45-year-old driver was not hurt and has undergone mandatory blood and urine testing.
Investigations are continuing and police were to address the media on Tuesday morning.
